“Beauty in Unity”
The “Beauty in Unity” exchange,
application number
LV-11-21-2006-R 1is approved by the
Youth Program through the Latvian
National Agency.
The countries that will be involved in
this project are:
Latvia,
Greece,
Italy,
Hungary and
The Netherlands.
This exchange is organized by the
Christian Youth association “Krista” and
will take place in Līgatne, Latvia from
30th of July until the 13th of August
2006.
We invite all the youth between 15 and
25 that are interested in participating
in this wonderful intercultural
exchange.
We especially invite people that work
within youth organizations, unemployed
youth or people with different social or
physical disadvantages.
In order to meet the newest needs in the
personal development of young people, we
developed an exciting program, filled
with joyful, dynamic and challenging
activities.
As you will be able to see in the
detailed program, the exchange is
divided into 4 parts.
1. Personal development:
In order to create equality, we create a
common starting position in the exchange
by:
-
Acquainting you with the method we
use during the activities in our
youth exchanges/trainings:
“Learning to play, playing to
learn.”;
-
Developing, practicing and improving
your communication styles with
dynamic and creative activities;
-
Offering you a large variety of
tools, which you can implement
during the entire exchange and also
back home within your own social and
professional activities.
2.
The Workshops:
This part of the exchange will last for
4 days. In this part you will be the
creator of your our activities.We
provide you with a challenging
opportunity of working within an
international group in which you can use
your personal skills in creating dynamic
and exciting activities for the rest of
the group.
We will only provide you with the time
table, and the rest will be your own
playfield. At the end of each “workshop”
as we call it, you will have the
opportunity to share and reflect on the
preparation time, the implementation and
results you have created with your
group.

Also, on the 9th day you will
have a free day. By this, you will have
an exciting opportunity of visiting Riga
the capital of Latvia, or any other
beautiful city that will be at your
convenience.
3.
The outdoor:
In this part of the exchange, we, the
organizing team, will develop a three
day outdoor program for you. By this we
aim to create an intensive, playful and
challenging way of individual personal
development within a group context.
The team itself will organize and
provide you with all the activities; you
only need to “enjoy the ride”.
4. Closing:
The last part of the exchange, we will
have a beautiful opportunity of sharing
our learning points, our results during
the exchange within a wonderful event
organized by the team itself: open day.
The team will invite guests: people from
all walks of life, that are themselves
interested in finding out how an
exchange is developed and implemented by
youth, and in this case: you and us the
team.
During the last day we give different
symbolic presents to each other and
there is a closing ceremony for the
participants and team.
As we already mentioned, this project is
an individual exchange in a group
context. Therefore, we plan, through out
the learning activities, to achieve a
development of skills and behaviour
changes such as:
· -
communication,
· -
cooperation,
· -
group dynamics,
· -
problem solving,
· -
intercultural team-work,
· -
handling resistance;
· -
coaching;
· -
decision –making; etc
The
main theme
that we
will focus on during this exchange is
Beauty in Unity.
Beauty in Unity we can experience by
cooperation and being open. By
cooperation, we mean
a coordinated action between two ore
more persons, working towards a common
goal, in which you look through the eyes
of the other person. By openness, we
mean the willingness to let something in
that (possibly) does not correspond to
what you think and believe in.
We think that a powerful way to reach
Beauty in Unity is by practicing
leadership. By this, we mean
to inspire others into action by being
the example yourself.
Hereby, we invite you to take part in
the special exchange we are preparing
for you!

TRAINING METHOD of the Olde Vechte Synergy
Group
Learning to play, playing to learn
Learning by experience, outdoor training,
and theatre plays are working methods which
all have one thing in common: playing.
Playing allows us to access a state of
freedom, creativity and exploration that is
associated with the natural learning of
childhood. Role-plays, structured
experiments, simulation, and theatre are
examples of games with experiential learning
opportunities. Games can create a play
frame, which makes the act of learning a
dynamic and enjoyable process, which recalls
the carefree playing time of childhood.
Experiential activities can transform
learning into adventure. Learning in this
way is an emotional, physical as well as a
cognitive experience. Movement and feelings
stimulate the learning process. Playing
involves both mind and body and can provoke
an emotional response during the exercises.
The exercises are designed to use social
skills and make clear / illustrate concepts
and theories. Almost any topic can be
explored through games. Learning processes
that involve the development of skills and
behavioural change, such as group dynamics,
communication, leadership, problem solving,
teamwork, coaching, co-operation and
decision-making are very suitable for
gaming.
Gaming is a working method, which might
create a paradoxical situation in which
participants or a group might loose
themselves. The objective of using gaming in
this kind of training is to get more
knowledge and skills to work with groups in
the field of youth work and social work.
Although this working method may seem
enjoyable, it is not "only a game". It
allows the players to use the freedom to
experiment with new approaches and new
behaviour and to acquire skills and
knowledge. The players are asked to look at
how they behave in the play. Therefore
feedback and reflection are an essential
part in this way of working. Playing games
as a tool for learning is a serious play or
'playful seriousness'.
The Olde Vechte Foundation has developed
this working method in a specific way. Since
the founding of the "Olde Vechte" foundation
in 1966 we have used a group accommodation
for the training- and education activities.
Working with groups in a hostel situation
has been a part of the working method.
Our training method is based on learning by
experience in our approach. We invite
participants to point out where they find
themselves at that moment in the learning
process, what they want to learn and how
they want to develop themselves. It is
focused on the experience of the individual
and it is connected to the specific needs
and the level of learning of the participant
at that moment. The programme is a tool for
the participant and not the other way
around. No matter how logical this may
sound, in many formal learning situations
the usual form of acquiring knowledge is
'learning from lessons'. The knowledge
should be reproduced / copied by the
student, without any personal interaction.
'Learning by experience' is different since
it starts from the person him/ herself,
his/her behaviour, reactions and emotions.
This method is often used in youth work and
informal education. In addition, more and
more this method is used in formal education
and trainings for companies.
The way, in
which we like to organise and perform this
international training, means that main
objectives of the training have to be clear
to the participants, as well as the outlines
of the programme and the target group. In
this way, we create a playing field for
participants and trainers where we can play
to learn and learn to play.
Within the given group, you participate in
the training for yourself and with yourself
as an individual. The exercises (called
‘processes’ in our training context) will be
done alternately alone, in pairs or in a
group. The trainer will prepare the ground
by giving plenary lectures. Some processes
may involve talking, others listening or
visualising certain thoughts with your eyes
closed. Exercises will be provided in
combination with music, dance or play. Many
processes will contain an element of
surprise, the exact nature of which is
unknown in advance. In a way questions can
only be answered by the participant him/
herself, namely by experiencing his own
reactions.
With this training approach, there is room
for the experiences and wishes of the
participants to influence the content of the
programme while it is taking place. We
create the playing field the participants
make the play.
